Final programme

The final programme with presentation titles can be found here.

Information form

We would like to ask each participant to fill out the following form (on dietary restrictions, conference certificates and the preconference workshops) before 1 July. If you have not already done so, please take a minute now.

Registration, venue & public transport

The conference will take place from 5 until 7 July at the VU Griffioen Cultural Centre, Uilenstede 106, 1183 AM Amstelveen, which is easy to reach by public transport. From Amsterdam City Centre or Amsterdam Zuid Station you can simply take tram 5 (direction Amstelveen Binnenhof) or metro 51 (direction Amstelveen Westwijk). Get out at stop ‘Uilenstede’ (the 4th stop after Amsterdam Zuid) and follow conference directions. The venue is a 5-minute walk from there.

More information on public transport and tickets for public transport can be found on the I Amsterdam website.

Registration will take place at the venue on Thursday 5 July from 8.30 onwards. The registration desk will remain open throughout the entire conference, but we would like to encourage you to register on Thursday morning.

Preconference workshops 4 July

On Wednesday afternoon (between 13.00 and 16.30), we have organized two preconference workshops on academic presentation (by Marjolein Cremer) and publishing (by Leila Ranta & Joanna White), which are open to young researchers and others interested. See the conference programme page for a full description (https://ala2018.com/programme/).

NB! The preconference workshops on Wednesday will take place at a different location: the VU Metropolitan Building, Buitenveldertselaan 3, 1082 VA Amsterdam. This is also located along tram line 5 and metro line 51. Get out at stop ‘Boelelaan/VU’. The venue is across the street from there.

AV equipment for presenters

In every room a standard Windows laptop (with a recent version of Microsoft Office installed), a 4000 ansilumen projection unit and audio equipment (loudspeakers) will be ready for use for all presenters. It is probably easiest to bring a flash drive with your presentation to the conference venue; or make sure you will be able to access your presentation online. If you want to be absolutely sure that your presentation works perfectly, we advise you to check the devices in your room before your session starts. You can always ask Sebastiaan or someone at the registration desk to assist you. If you would like to use your own Mac for the presentation, please bring your own adapter.

Lunch, drinks and dietary restrictions

The conference fee includes lunch, tea and coffee throughout the conference. Since many climate studies indicate that eating vegetarian food reduces a person’s daily carbon footprint, we asked our caterer, Il Caffè, to create a wonderfully tasty vegetarian lunch for all conference delegates. So, although many people will arrive by plane, once in Holland we will do the best we can to green-up our footprints. For those delegates who still prefer a non-vegetarian option after day 1, we will offer the possibility to indicate this at our registration desk. If there are any dietary restrictions we should take into account, please indicate this on the form.

Language games

Of course, a conference is serious business and much of our time will be devoted to exchanging ideas on research and professional practice. But wouldn’t it be fun to get to know each other better during a game of ‘Story Cubes’, or eat lunch over a game of ‘Tell me’? We would like to invite all delegates to bring their (travel versions of) language games to the conference to play during breaks. What better way to train our language awareness?

Social programme

The social programme will take place on Friday evening and includes a canal boat tour through Amsterdam (with language-related details!) and dinner at Frenzi restaurant in the Amsterdam city centre. More information will be provided at the venue.

Best wishes,

The ALA2018 local organizing committee
